Kotas Reviews Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout

Hello sportsball fans! It's time for March Madness, and maybe some other holiday that has been co-opted by foolish Americans to be about drinking! The last couple of months have been somewhat grumpy for me since I've been dieting. Why grumpy? Well, alcohol tends to have a pile of calories, and your body doesn't notice because hey, liquids don't apparently count am I right? WRONG. The beer gut is a thing for a reason, and sadly I had to mostly remove the delicious pleasures of booze from my diet. Sure, I still had the various "ultra light" beers that I could "enjoy", but they have all the flavor and body of weak tea...bad weak tea. I decided I would rather go without than suffer through them. Until I discovered...today's topic!

Dun, dun, DUUUUUUUUUN!
Brooklyn Brewery is a lot like Sam Adam's for me. I tend to really enjoy everything but their flagship product, in this case, Brooklyn Lager. It's not bad, but I always thought their Brown Ale offering to be far superior, and most of their other varieties are pretty darn tasty. When I saw this in the grocery store I just had to have it. I'm a terrible sucker for seasonal beers. I know, I know, you are all shocked. Shocked I say!

Brooklyn Brewery has always had distinct labeling, and this is no exception. The orange is a weird choice of accent color, but it isn't terrible and the rest of the logo just screams "Yeah, I'm totally Irish over heeeeah!" Just like in Brooklyn. Let's pop that top and see what it's got goin' on inside!

She don't look like much, but she's got it where it counts.
This is definitely a stout, as you can see. Totally opaque to light, and with very little head. I expected this to be a pretty heavy beverage, but I was totally surprised. This dry stout has a nice malty aroma, and the flavor? Well, the flavor is pretty much roasted malt and coffee, with a hint of chocolate. Don't let that fool you though, this is very drinkable. The flavor hits the taste buds, then vanishes, leaving only a nice clean hint of an aftertaste. Due to unexpected circumstances, I found myself having to chug down a bottle in a hurry...no problems with that! Definitely a solid session beer, since it doesn't sit too heavy in the stomach. The best part? Every bottle is 117 calories. Most beers with this sort of flavor are closer to 150 or 200 calories, but not this little gem!

On the FACE Rating System, this beer gets 3 smiley faces. It is not my absolute favorite beer of all time, but it is very, VERY good and clocks in low on the calorie totem pole. This may be the best beer I've had that was below 120 calories. I will absolutely have to stockpile some of this stuff for my continued dieting ways, that is for sure!
